High energy protons and atomic nuclei that originate from distant outside our solar system (or the Sun) and move at the speed of light are known as cosmic rays. Studying their origins, and their measurement, is important because they have significant effects on atmospheric chemistry, ambient radiation, aerospace travel,electronics, and much more.
